INJECTABLES (BOTOX)

If you’ve noticed unwanted wrinkles and creases appearing on your face, the thought of getting Botox injections has probably already crossed your mind. Botox can be used to treat very specific and targeted areas of aging on the face. Schedule an appointment to treat any of these skin conditions:

Botox has become a household name in the world of aesthetic medicine. Botox injections are shots that use a toxin to prevent a muscle from moving for a limited time. These shots are often used to smooth wrinkles on the face. They’re also used to treat neck spasms, sweating, overactive bladder, lazy eye and other conditions. Botox shots also may help prevent migraine.

Botulinum toxin type A belongs to a category of drugs called neuromodulators. There are currently five FDA-approved brands of botulinum toxins products used in cosmetic treatments. All of which share the same primary active ingredient and have undergone rigorous testing to be FDA-approved.

5 FDA approved botulinum toxins commonly used are:

  1. Botox (Allergan)
  2. Dysport (Galderma)
  3. Xeomin (Merz)
  4. Jeuveau (Evolus)
  5. Daxxify (Revance)

When injected into the targeted muscles, botulinum toxin blocks the release of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. This temporarily prevents muscle contractions, effectively smoothing fine lines and wrinkles caused by repetitive facial expressions.

Yes, it is possible to switch between different brands of botulinum toxin type A products.

While each brand has its unique characteristics, they all contain the same active ingredient – botulinum toxin type A – and work by blocking the nerve signals that cause muscle contractions. The effectiveness of each brand may vary slightly depending on individual factors and preferences. It’s important to discuss your specific concerns and goals with your Lumina provider to achieve results that make you happy and confident.

As with any medical treatment, there are potential side effects associated with botulinum toxin injections. These may include temporary redness, swelling, bruising, or pain at the injection site. More serious side effects, such as allergic reaction or muscle weakness, are rare but can occur. It is important to discuss the potential risks and benefits of treatment before undergoing any botulinum toxin injections.

The visible results from botulinum toxin injections can typically be seen as early as 3-7 days after treatment. However, the full effect of the treatment may take up to 2 weeks. It’s important to have realistic expectations and be patient as your body responds to the treatment.

The effects of botulinum toxin injections generally last between 3-6 months depending on your metabolism and muscle strength. To maintain results and younger looking skin, you will need to undergo regular follow-up injections. At Lumina, we have clients who get treatment once a year before a big event, and other clients that get it done 3-4 times a year for both maintenance and preventive treatment. There is no required timeline for treatments. The specific duration and frequency of treatments will depend on factors such as the brand used, the area treated, and your individual response to the injections. Lack of muscle contraction prevents lines and wrinkles from forming, so receiving a treatment as soon as your body metabolizes the product will help you maintain youthful looking skin.

It also allows the active ingredients in our boosters to penetrate deeper, for the most effective treatment possible. Schedule an appointment for an unbelievable healthy glow today!

ABOUT SCITON® LASERS

Sciton is one of the world’s leading companies that develops light-based devices for medical and cosmetic applications. These devices include lasers and broadband light (BBL) devices. Broadband light devices are also called Intense Pulsed Light (IPL).

Lumina uses Sciton’s non-invasive lasers, including Forever Clear BBL, Forever Bare BBL, BBL HERO, and MOXI.

mJoule is Sciton’s FDA-approved platform that forms the skeleton upon which new devices are developed. The platform development process ensures the highest degree of safety and effectiveness when rolling out new products. MOXI and BBL HERO are not new inventions, rather they result from Sciton’s ever-evolving mJoule platform.

BBL HERO stands for broadband light (BBL) high energy rapid output (HERO). Broadband light/IPL differs from lasers. Lasers use a narrowly focused wavelength on the light spectrum. IPL uses a broad spectrum of light, hence the name broadband light. Sciton innovated HERO to allow medical practitioners to conduct treatments faster than ever before.

A HERO laser treatment is the ultimate BBL device and can treat any of the following skin problems and flaws:

Sunspots
Age spots
Wrinkles, fine lines
Uneven skin tone
Sun damage
Spider veins
Rosacea
Hyperpigmented skin
Cherry angiomas
Freckles
  1. Corrects damaged skin (photo-rejuvenation)
Reduces fine lines in the skin
    Tightens the skin
    Reduces age spots
    Repairs damage from the sun
    Reduces scarring
  2. Maintains healthy skin
    Boosts collagen and elastin production
  3. Delays aging of the skin
Skin cells behave like those of a younger person

Moxi is a gentle fractionated laser designed to effectively treat the visible signs of aging and produce evenly toned, radiant skin in as little as a single treatment- although 2-3 are recommended. Ideal for all skin types who are just beginning their skin care journey or those looking for a light resurfacing option that can be performed anytime of year.

Patients around the globe love MOXI. The newest rejuvenation device to delay the appearance of aging or those looking to maintain beautiful skin with little to no downtime or discomfort. In a quick 8-10 minute procedure, MOXI comfortably delivers non-ablative laser energy to correct the initial signs of sun damage and aging regardless of skin type. When combined with BBL HERO, this dynamic duo provides patients with even better results.

The MOXI laser treatment is gentle and safe for all skin types. Visible skin rejuvenation is achieved by a fractional non-ablative treatment with a 1927nm device heating tiny columns of your skin, leaving the surrounding skin intact and unharmed for faster healing. The treatment can treat the following skin conditions:

Melasma and hyperpigmentation
Sunspots
Age spots
Wrinkles/fine lines
Enlarged pores
Uneven skin tone

In the weeks before your treatment, you should:

  1. Avoid tanning, both at tanning salons and under the sun.
  2. Avoid blood-thinning medication such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and other supplements. Blood-thinning medication can affect your circulation and increase the chances of bruising and swelling.

On the day of your laser/BBL sessions, avoid wearing perfume, make-up, or other topicals that may irritate the skin or interfere with your treatment. You want to make sure your body is in optimal condition, primed, and ready for your treatments.

Recovery from light therapy sessions is simple. You won’t need long recovery times and weeks taken off work. We may recommend you apply an anesthetic topical cream to the area prior to receiving treatment and to stay out of the sun for a few days. But, just 24 hours after treatment, you can apply makeup again.

We generally recommend 1-3 initial treatment sessions for the BBL HERO body treatments and 3-4 initial treatment sessions for MOXI laser resurfacing of the face. Results should become visible in 2-4 weeks after both BBL HERO & MOXI sessions.

One concern with laser treatment has traditionally been whether they can be effective on dark skin tones. Don’t fret—medical research has found both BBL and non-ablative lasers are effective at treating conditions and stimulating collagen and elastin in patients with darker skin types.

Lipedema is a chronic medical condition characterized by a symmetric buildup of adipose tissue (fat) in the legs and arms. A common but under recognized disorder, Lipedema may cause pain, swelling, and easy bruising. It may be accompanied by an unusual texture within the fat that can feel like rice, peas, or walnuts beneath the surface of the skin. The intensity of pain may range from none to severe, and its frequency may be constant, come and go, or only occur when the fat is pushed on. Limited public awareness of Lipedema, coupled with few research-backed treatments, can lead to exacerbation of symptoms as well as physical and emotional distress. Common symptoms include fatigue, muscle pain, or easy bruising.

Lipedema occurs almost exclusively in females, with rare reports of development in men. Although believed to be prevalent, the exact incidence is not known.

The causes of Lipedema are not well understood. It is reported to start or worsen during puberty and other periods of hormonal changes, such as pregnancy and menopause. Research is underway to determine the biological role of hormones, genetics, inflammation, and metabolism in the condition’s development.

No. Obese fat occurs throughout the body. In Lipedema, the fat occurs in the limbs, sparing the hands and feet. People with early-stage Lipedema typically do not have diabetes, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure.

The swelling in lymphedema often affects only one side of the body and includes the hands and feet. Lymphedema can be diagnosed with imaging.

In a word, swelling. Extra fluid builds up in your tissue when your lymphatic system isn’t working well, usually because your lymph nodes were damaged or removed. It can be a side effect of cancer treatment and can show up years later. This is called secondary lymphedema. It can also present in young people without cancer. This is called primary lymphedema.

The lymphatic system is part of your immune system. It moves fluid through your body, picking up waste, bacteria, and viruses. Your lymph nodes filter out the waste and flush it from your body. When something goes wrong, the fluid backs up in your tissue. Most often, your lymph nodes got damaged. Sometimes the vessels get blocked. But lymphedema can also happen without a clear reason.
